What to Know before You Insulate Your Whole House

Spray foam insulation is an excellent material that can save you a lot of time and money by helping you reduce energy costs during the colder months. Foam insulation is an excellent material for the attic, basement, walls, and even crawl spaces.

However, as with most things, it is not without controversy. Should you spray foam your whole house? If so, how can you do it safely and effectively? This article will help you decide if spray foam is the right option for your home or business.

The Different Types of Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is available in two types: open-cell and closed-cell. Use the right one for the right application.

  • Open Cell Foam

This is best used for indoor applications. It is sprayed directly into the wall cavities or void spaces. Once sprayed, it expands as it cures. It works best as a sealant around doors, windows and between studs in walls. It fills the void of the wall but only seals to the surface.

  • Closed Cell Foam

This is better for the outdoors because it is denser. Although somewhat more expensive, it is worth the investment for energy efficiency. It works well as a thermal barrier on walls, attics, and crawl spaces.

Insulating Your Whole House with Spray Foam

This is an issue that has been debated for years. Should you spray foam the whole exterior of your house? This is a difficult question to answer without knowing your particular circumstances. It is possible to close all the gaps in your house by spraying the walls, but this may not be the best option for you.

If you live in a cold climate, it’s a great option. Spray foam will insulate your home, eliminating drafts and increasing your home’s energy efficiency. It will also add value to your home. Spray foam is not cheap, but the return on your investment may come in the form of lower heating and cooling bills.

You should use closed-cell foam on the exterior of your home, especially if you live in a cold climate. It will block the cold from seeping in and the heat from escaping out.

The spray foam will create a tight seal between your home and the outside environment, preventing moisture from getting in, leading to mould, mildew, and indoor air quality issues.

Closed-cell spray foam is also fire resistant and a good sound barrier. It can be sprayed directly under stucco with little or no preparation.

You should be aware that it may change the appearance of your home, but it will also increase your home’s value. In many cases, the extra expense will be more than worth the investment. Although it may be difficult to justify the cost, the improvements in comfort level, energy efficiency, and resale value may make it worthwhile.

Ready, Set, Insulate

If you are thinking about using spray foam, you will want to do your research to understand all the benefits and risks. It can be an excellent method to insulate your home. However, you should always follow the manufacturer’s directions and consult a professional to ensure the process is completed safely.
